A tragic incident unfolded in Asansol, West Bengal, on Saturday, resulting in the death of 43-year-old Debdeep Chatterjee, a share trader and ardent Congress supporter. The altercation reportedly began after Chatterjee’s car accidentally brushed against a parked motorcycle near his residence. Eyewitness accounts indicate that this minor incident escalated into a violent confrontation involving a mob.
According to reports, the incident occurred around 1 a.m. as Chatterjee, along with his wife Piyali and their 10-year-old son, was returning home from a social gathering. Upon the accidental contact with the motorcycle, a group of men confronted them. Despite Chatterjee’s attempt to defuse the situation by apologizing, tensions flared, leading to a physical assault.
Witnesses and local Congress leaders allege that the individuals responsible for the attack are associated with a prominent leader of the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC). Chatterjee was allegedly beaten severely, leading him to fall and strike his head on the pavement, which resulted in loss of consciousness. Emergency medical services were called, but sadly, he was pronounced dead upon arrival at the hospital.
The authorities have since announced that three individuals have been apprehended in connection with the violent incident. The local police have stated that Chatterjee’s body has been sent for a post-mortem examination to determine the cause of death officially.
This incident has sparked outrage within the Congress party, with leaders condemning the attack and calling it indicative of a broader issue regarding political violence and the deterioration of law and order in West Bengal. The Congress party has expressed grave concerns over the safety of opposition party members, suggesting that such violent episodes pose a significant threat to democratic processes in the state.
