NIA Claims Yasin Malik Had Ties With Pakistani Leaders to Promote Jammu and Kashmir’s Secession

In a significant development, the National Investigation Agency (NIA) has informed the Delhi High Court that separatist leader Yasin Malik maintained connections with prominent figures in the Pakistani government, including its Prime Minister and President. This information came to light during the agency’s hearing, where it argued that Malik utilized these relationships to advocate for the secession of Jammu and Kashmir from India.

The NIA presented its arguments before a bench comprising Justices Navin Chawla and Ravinder Dudeja, as part of its effort to escalate Malik’s life sentence in a terror funding case to the death penalty. The court has scheduled further proceedings for July 21. Malik, who appeared virtually from Tihar Jail, was informed that he would receive a copy of the NIA’s rejoinder through the jail authorities.

Malik was sentenced to life imprisonment in May 2022 after a trial court found him guilty of engaging in activities that supported terrorism in the region. Along with other separatist leaders, he was accused of collaborating with active militants from banned terrorist organizations to collect and distribute funds, both domestically and internationally. His convictions were based on multiple offenses under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act and the Indian Penal Code.

In response to the NIA’s call for the death penalty, Malik has argued that he has dedicated nearly three decades to the separatist cause in Jammu and Kashmir. His long-standing involvement has made him a prominent figure in the region’s ongoing tensions, which have seen violent unrest over the years. The allegations against him and his associates reflect the complex interplay of local sentiments and external influences that characterize the Kashmir conflict.
