Punjab Assembly Unanimously Passes Bill for Life Imprisonment in Guru Granth Sahib Sacrilege Cases

In a significant move, the Punjab Assembly has unanimously approved a new bill aimed at imposing life imprisonment and hefty fines for acts of sacrilege against the Guru Granth Sahib. The legislation, titled the Jaagat Jot Sri Guru Granth Sahib Satkar Amendment Bill 2026, was introduced by Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann during a special session dedicated to this pressing issue.

The bill amends the existing framework established by a 2008 law, which had been criticized for its inadequacy in addressing sacrilegious acts effectively. Speaking on the occasion, Mann emphasized the importance of safeguarding the revered scripture, stating, “If the Sri Guru Granth Sahib is not safe in Punjab, then where else can it be?” His remarks highlight the emotional and cultural significance of the Guru Granth Sahib in the Sikh community, underscoring the necessity of stringent legal measures to prevent sacrilege.

The impetus for this legislative action follows a series of incidents involving disrespect towards the Guru Granth Sahib, which have not only hurt the sentiments of the Sikh community but also led to widespread unrest in the state. The government noted that past provisions under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, including Sections 298, 299, and 300, have proven insufficient in deterring such acts of sacrilege. These sections deal with offenses related to the defilement of places of worship and the intent to outrage religious feelings.

The amended bill proposes severe penalties, including a fine of up to Rs 25 lakh, highlighting the government’s commitment to taking a firm stance against any act perceived as disrespectful to the Guru Granth Sahib. The state Cabinet had previously approved the amendments, reinforcing the administration’s resolve to close gaps left by previous governments in the legal framework surrounding religious respect and protection.

This legislative development is viewed as a pivotal step towards restoring faith in the system and ensuring that the sanctity of the Guru Granth Sahib, which is central to Sikh faith, is maintained.
