The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has formally addressed the Union government regarding a grave issue concerning the mental health of Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) personnel. A recent report highlighted that between January and May 2023, 19 CRPF members tragically took their own lives, a situation that has alarmed both the NHRC and the public.
In its notification, the NHRC expressed deep concern over these alarming statistics, which point to a broader issue of mental well-being and the safety of those serving in paramilitary forces. The commission took suo moto cognizance of an incident reported on August 11, which brought to light that the CRPF witnessed its highest number of suicide cases in five years, with 59 personnel reportedly dying by suicide in 2025 alone.
The NHRC has reached out to the Union Home Secretary and the Director General of the CRPF, demanding a comprehensive report addressing the issue within a two-week timeframe. This response comes in light of an alarming trend over the last five years, during which a total of 281 CRPF personnel are reported to have died by suicide, with 216 of these incidents occurring while they were on duty.
Yearly breakdowns of these tragic incidents reveal troubling figures: the force documented 57 suicides in 2021, 43 in 2022, 57 in 2023, and 46 in 2024. These statistics not only underscore the urgent need for mental health interventions and support for paramilitary personnel but also highlight the pressures faced by those serving in such challenging roles.
As the NHRC continues its investigation, the spotlight is now on the government and the CRPF to take effective measures to address mental health challenges within the force. The rising rates of suicide among paramilitary personnel call for immediate scrutiny and action to ensure the well-being of those who sacrifice their lives for the safety of the nation.
