In a tragic escalation of violence in Manipur, two individuals from the Naga community lost their lives due to a shooting attributed to suspected militants in the Kangpokpi district. The incident occurred around 8 AM when a group equipped with advanced weaponry launched an assault on Langka Naga village, as reported by an unnamed police official.
Following the attack, local residents revealed that armed members from the Naga community retaliated against the assailants. In response to these violent occurrences, the Liangmai Naga Council-Manipur has accused militants linked to the Kuki National Front (P) of orchestrating this attack and has therefore declared an immediate shutdown across regions populated by Liangmai Naga individuals. This decision reflects the community’s outrage and the need for heightened security amidst growing tensions.
Meanwhile, in a separate legal development, the Supreme Court of India has dismissed criminal charges against comedian Samay Raina and four others concerning remarks deemed insensitive towards people with disabilities made during a segment of the comedy show “India’s Got Latent.” The apex court acknowledged their contributions towards raising awareness and funds for the disabled community, emphasizing that genuine efforts often yield positive outcomes.
The bench recognized the defendants — including fellow comedians Vipul Goyal, Sonali Thakkar, and Nishant Jagdish Tanwar, as well as Balraj Paramjeet Singh Ghai, the proprietor of the comedy venue The Habitat — as potential catalysts for social change. The court noted, “If these bright youngsters are embarking on a constructive path, it is expected that their initiatives will lead to positive results.” This ruling marks a significant moment for creative expression within the bounds of social responsibility.
In related news, the upcoming Census 2027 will include questions aimed at identifying respondents’ affiliations with Scheduled Castes or Scheduled Tribes. Furthermore, it will introduce an open-ended query for individuals to express their identities beyond these classifications. This approach indicates a move towards inclusivity and a deeper understanding of the diverse demographics that constitute India.
