Two Arrested in Uttar Pradesh Following Assault of Muslim Driver

In a tragic incident that has drawn significant attention in Uttar Pradesh, two individuals were taken into custody on Thursday in connection with the death of Azeem Ali, a 24-year-old Muslim truck driver. Ali succumbed to his injuries four days after he was reportedly assaulted by a group of kanwariyas in Hapur district on July 31.

The police had initiated a formal inquiry following the complaint lodged by Ali’s father, Mohd Intezar, leading to a first information report (FIR) against seven suspects, which included four kanwariyas. The arrested individuals, Lokesh and Shivam, are among five named in the FIR alongside Ankit, Farman, and Manish, with two other unidentified individuals also implicated. The charges against them include murder, rioting, and causing bodily harm under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.

Azeem Ali’s ordeal began when his truck collided with an auto rickshaw occupied by the kanwariyas in Garhmukhteshwar, a town in Hapur. The accident reportedly resulted in injuries to the auto rickshaw driver, Farman, prompting a violent reaction from the kanwariyas. A disturbing video of the assault has surfaced on social media, showing Ali being attacked by multiple men in the presence of a police officer, raising questions about law enforcement’s response during the incident.

After the assault, Ali was initially rushed to a hospital in Meerut for treatment but was later transferred to a medical facility in Delhi due to the severity of his condition. Unfortunately, he fell into a coma and ultimately passed away on August 4. This incident has sparked outrage and ignited discussions about communal tensions and the treatment of minorities in India, particularly during religious events such as the kanwar yatra.

As investigations continue, the local police have urged the community to maintain calm and refrain from spreading misinformation. The incident reflects ongoing societal issues related to communal harmony and the responsibilities of law enforcement in protecting citizens. With the arrests made, authorities hope to bring justice to Azeem Ali’s family and ensure accountability for those responsible.
