Nineteen Arrested in Jharkhand Amid Civil Service Exam Irregularities Scandal

In a significant development regarding the alleged irregularities in the Jharkhand civil service examinations, nineteen individuals have been detained, as confirmed by state minister Shilpi Neha Tirkey. Addressing a press conference, Tirkey characterized the situation as ‘quite shameful’ and assured that the coalition government, led by Chief Minister Hemant Soren, is committed to a thorough investigation of the matter.

This announcement comes against the backdrop of ongoing protests by students, which have now entered their 14th consecutive day. The protests began on July 25, influenced by a broader national movement against what many perceive as the mismanagement of competitive examinations across the country. The demonstrators have established a sit-in at the Jaipal Singh Munda Stadium in Ranchi, where six individuals are currently on a hunger strike, highlighting the urgency of their demands.

The protesters are specifically calling for the cancellation of the 14th Jharkhand Public Service Commission Combined Preliminary Test, which took place on April 19. They are also advocating for independent investigations by the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) and the Enforcement Directorate (ED) into claims of discrepancies in the recruitment processes of both the Jharkhand Public Service Commission and the Jharkhand Staff Selection Commission.

On Thursday, as part of their ongoing efforts to engage with the government, the protesting students formed an 11-member delegation. This group includes eight student representatives: Ravindra Paswan, Piyush Kumar Singh, Ravindra Kumar Ravi, Rajesh Prasad, Neetu Kujur, Kartik Soren, Sandeep Kumar, and Shaalu Singh. Additionally, the delegation features a journalist, a parent representative, and a legal expert, all aiming to communicate the students’ demands and seek resolution.

The situation has drawn significant attention in Jharkhand and beyond, as the integrity of civil service examinations is critical for maintaining public trust in recruitment processes. The government’s response and the outcomes of these protests will be closely monitored, as they could set important precedents for future examinations in the state.
