The National Council of Educational Research and Training (NCERT) has taken a significant step in the realm of education by incorporating a section on the Emergency period of 1975-1977 into the Class 9 social science textbook. This is a first for the NCERT, which has included this crucial chapter in its updated textbook titled Understanding Society: India and Beyond.
The addition of this topic is particularly noteworthy as it marks the first time students in Class 9 will engage with this pivotal moment in Indian history, which has been previously reserved for the Class 12 political science syllabus. In that curriculum, the Emergency is analyzed through its political, constitutional, and democratic ramifications, but now younger students will also have the opportunity to understand its implications on democracy in India.
The newly added section outlines the circumstances that led to the imposition of the Emergency, detailing the growing public discontent with the then-government led by Prime Minister Indira Gandhi during the early 1970s. Issues such as rising unemployment, soaring inflation, and allegations of misgovernance ignited widespread protests across the nation. The textbook emphasizes that this period represented a critical challenge to India’s democratic framework.
During the Emergency, many fundamental rights were suspended, leading to severe restrictions on personal freedoms, press censorship, and the arrest of numerous political leaders and activists. The textbook also pays tribute to the influential role played by socialist leader Jayaprakash Narayan, often referred to as Lok Nayak. He spearheaded mass movements that galvanized students and citizens, particularly in states like Bihar and Gujarat, in opposition to the government’s authoritarian measures.
This introduction of the Emergency in the Class 9 syllabus is aimed at educating students about the historical context and the importance of safeguarding democratic values. By including this significant chapter, NCERT hopes to foster a deeper understanding of India’s political landscape, encouraging students to reflect on the lessons learned from this tumultuous period in history.
