Himatsingka released a series of videos highlighting the beverage’s high sugar content, revealing that 100 grams of Bournvita contained a staggering 37.4 grams of added sugar. This raised significant questions about its classification as a health drink, igniting a debate among consumers and health advocates alike.
The backlash led Mondelez India, the company behind Bournvita, to take swift legal action against Himatsingka, serving him with notices in response to his allegations. In a move that shocked many, the influencer ultimately complied and removed his videos. However, the public’s reaction was fierce, and the Union government quickly took note of the growing controversy.
Following public outcry, the National Commission for Protection of Child Rights urged the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) to investigate Mondelez’s marketing claims regarding Bournvita. In a bid to address the issue, FSSAI released a statement within a month, declaring that it had flagged 32 new cases involving misleading health claims in food products. Although Bournvita was not explicitly named in the press release, various media outlets reported that the controversy had prompted the regulatory body to take decisive action against misleading advertisements.
