UN Maritime Organization and Oman Launch Evacuation for Stranded Seafarers in Strait of Hormuz

The United Nations’ International Maritime Organization (IMO) has unveiled a comprehensive plan to evacuate over 11,000 seafarers and their vessels that have been stranded in the strategically significant Strait of Hormuz. This decision comes as tensions in the region have escalated, highlighting the urgent need for safe passage in one of the world’s busiest shipping lanes.

IMO Secretary-General Arsenio Dominguez announced the operation, emphasizing that it will proceed in collaboration with various stakeholders, including Iran, Oman, the United States, and other coastal states. Dominguez reassured that all necessary safety guarantees have been secured to ensure the safe navigation of vessels, stating, “We remain fully committed to ensuring the safety of seafarers and the continuity of global trade.” This operation aims not only to safeguard those stranded but also to alleviate the pressures on global energy supply chains.

The Strait of Hormuz, a crucial maritime corridor linking the Persian Gulf with the Arabian Sea, has faced significant disruptions since the onset of regional conflicts that began on February 28.
