Bakrid Dispute Leads to Clashes in Thane Housing Society

In a significant escalation of tensions, the Thane district of Maharashtra witnessed clashes between residents of a housing society and members of Hindutva groups over the traditional practice of goat sacrifice ahead of Bakrid, also known as Eid-al-Adha. The incident unfolded at Poonam Cluster 1 in Mira Bhayandar on Monday night, necessitating the deployment of over 200 police personnel to restore order.

The heart of the conflict arose when a section of the society’s residents raised objections to the construction of a temporary shed intended for housing around 50 goats, which are typically sacrificed during the festival that marks the spirit of sacrifice in Islam. An anonymous resident cited that while this practice has been ongoing for several years, a growing discomfort among some residents sparked the recent protests.

Municipal regulations had historically allowed such sacrifices in common areas of housing societies, provided hygiene, sanitation, and the lack of licensed slaughterhouses in proximity were maintained. However, the situation took a turn for the worse when discontented residents sought the intervention of the Bajrang Dal, a prominent Hindutva organization affiliated with the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh, which is closely aligned with the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party.

As tensions mounted, Bajrang Dal leaders arrived at the society around 10 PM on Monday, escalating an already volatile situation. The clash highlighted the broader societal issues surrounding communal harmony, particularly in a culture where religious practices are often entwined with local sentiments and regulations. Residents expressed their grievances over the goat sacrifices, indicating a growing divide that has implications beyond just the housing society.
