Four Arrested in Connection with Abduction of Naga Men in Manipur

In a significant development in Manipur, four individuals were taken into police custody on Monday for their alleged role in the abduction of six Naga men on May 13 in the Kangpokpi district. The arrests were made in an area situated between P Molding and Leilon Veiphei, underscoring the ongoing tensions in the region.

The suspects, identified as Thangkhomang Khongsai (51), Seikholet Khongsai (40), Lunminthang Dimngel (27), and Kamgoulal Khongsai (30), are believed to be linked to armed village volunteer groups that have emerged since the ethnic conflicts erupted in Manipur earlier this year. These groups have been associated with various anti-social activities, including extortion and criminal intimidation, as well as illegal possession of arms and ammunition, according to the police.

The term “village volunteers” refers to armed civilians tasked with protecting their communities amid escalating violence that has plagued Manipur since May 2023. The state has witnessed alarming incidents, including the hostage situation where over 38 individuals from both Kuki and Naga communities were reported to have been captured by armed groups in the Kangpokpi and Senapati districts. This grim scenario was highlighted by state Home Minister Govindas Konthoujam, who noted the complexity of the situation, stating that the precise number of hostages was still uncertain.

The recent arrests were made following a coordinated operation involving the state police, the Central Reserve Police Force, and the Assam Rifles, reflecting a serious law enforcement effort to tackle the surging violence in the region. This comes in the wake of tragic events, including the killing of three church leaders and injuries to five others, signaling a deepening crisis that has left many communities on edge.
