The Delhi High Court has declined to provide interim relief to the prestigious Delhi Gymkhana Club, rejecting its plea against an eviction order issued by the Union government. The Centre has mandated that the club vacate its expansive 27.3-acre grounds by June 5, 2024, a decision that has stirred considerable debate among its members and stakeholders.
During the proceedings, Justice Avneesh Jhingan acknowledged the urgency of the matter but chose not to suspend the eviction order temporarily. The court has, however, issued summons in response to lawsuits filed by the club’s members and employees challenging the government’s directive. Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, representing the government, assured the court that the eviction would proceed only after proper notification to the club, ensuring a peaceful transfer of the premises.
The Delhi Gymkhana Club stands as one of the capital’s oldest and most exclusive social and sporting establishments, frequented by influential figures, including diplomats, bureaucrats, and military personnel.
