In a significant political shift in Tamil Nadu, four MLAs from the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK) have resigned from their positions in the state assembly over the course of just two days. This series of resignations comes as three of these legislators have chosen to ally themselves with the ruling Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) led by Chief Minister Vijay.
The resignations began on Monday when Maragatham Kumaravel, representing Madurantakam, Sathyabama P from Dharapuram, and Jayakumar S from Perundurai, formally submitted their resignations. The Speaker of the Assembly accepted these resignations shortly thereafter, a move that has sparked controversy given that disqualification proceedings against these MLAs are still ongoing.
Later that same day, the three MLAs met with Public Works Department Minister Aadhav Arjuna at the Secretariat, officially joining the TVK. The following day, Esakki Subaya, the MLA from Ambasamudram, also decided to resign from his position, thereby further shrinking the AIADMK’s representation in the assembly to just 43.
Subaya has expressed that his decision was made with the best interests of his constituents in mind, stating he would provide a detailed explanation for his resignation shortly. The other three MLAs echoed similar sentiments, insisting that their actions were guided by the welfare of their regions rather than any personal ambitions.
The wave of resignations highlights an ongoing divide within the AIADMK, particularly among factions led by former ministers CV Shanmugam and SP Velumani. As the party grapples with internal strife, the exits of these four MLAs are likely to have far-reaching implications for the political landscape in Tamil Nadu, especially as the state heads towards upcoming elections.
