In a significant outcome for the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in West Bengal, candidate Debangshu Panda is poised for a substantial victory in the Falta Assembly repoll, as per the latest results from the Election Commission. After 20 rounds of counting out of 21, Panda has established a commanding lead of over 1 lakh votes against his nearest opponent from the Communist Party of India (Marxist), Sambhu Nath Kurmi.
As of the most recent tally, Panda has amassed approximately 137,000 votes, while Kurmi trails with around 38,265 votes. The political landscape shifted dramatically when Trinamool Congress (TMC) candidate Jahangir Khan withdrew from the race shortly before the election, just as the mandatory silence period began. Khan cited his decision as being in the interest of Falta’s development and public welfare, influenced by a special development package announced by BJP leader and Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari.
The TMC has characterized Khan’s withdrawal as a personal choice that does not reflect the party’s stance. Nonetheless, Khan’s name remained on the ballot due to the timing of his withdrawal, allowing him to receive over 7,400 votes despite not actively campaigning.
Falta’s initial voting took place on April 29, but the Election Commission called for a repoll on May 2, citing serious electoral violations and claims of undermining the democratic process. Allegations of malpractices had marred the initial election, prompting the commission’s decision to ensure a fairer electoral process.
This repoll has attracted significant attention, not only due to the controversies surrounding the previous voting but also because it reflects the ongoing political dynamics in West Bengal, where the BJP and TMC are engaged in a fierce contest for influence. As the counting continues, the BJP’s apparent success in Falta may bolster their claims of growing support in a state traditionally dominated by the TMC.
