N Rangasamy, the founder of the All India NR Congress, has taken the oath as the Chief Minister of Puducherry for the fifth time. The ceremony took place on Wednesday, where he was sworn in by Lieutenant Governor K Kailashnathan. This new administration marks a continuation of the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) government in the Union Territory, following a decisive victory in the recent assembly elections.
The NDA, led by the All India NR Congress, achieved a significant win in the Puducherry Assembly elections held on May 4, capturing 18 out of the 30 electoral seats. In contrast, the opposition coalition, the Secular Progressive Alliance, primarily comprised of Congress and the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK), managed to secure only six seats. Additionally, the newly formed Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam, launched by actor-turned-politician Vijay, won two seats, while its partner, Neyam Makkal Kazhagam, obtained one seat.
Despite the Assembly’s total of 33 seats, three are nominated by the Union government, which gives them the same authority as the 30 directly elected members. Rangasamy’s political journey has been notable; he previously served as the Chief Minister from 2001 to 2006 and again from 2006 to 2008 while representing the Congress party. His transition to founding the All India NR Congress has now solidified his leadership role in Puducherry.
Rangasamy won his recent election bids from the Thattanchavady and Mangalam constituencies, demonstrating his continuing influence in local politics. At 76 years old, his political career has spanned several decades, shaping the political landscape of Puducherry. His leadership is expected to focus on addressing various local issues, including governance, infrastructure development, and social welfare initiatives.
The swearing-in ceremony was attended by key political figures, including A Namassivayam from the Bharatiya Janata Party, who was also appointed as a minister. The new government faces the challenge of meeting the expectations of its constituents, especially given the context of the recent electoral outcomes. With a mixed assembly, the dynamics of governance could prove complex, requiring collaboration across party lines to ensure effective administration.
