Congress Backs Vijay’s Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam to Form Government in Tamil Nadu

The political landscape in Tamil Nadu has taken a significant turn as the Congress party has pledged its support to actor-turned-politician Vijay’s Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) in forming the government. This decision comes in the wake of the recent Assembly elections, where no single party or coalition achieved a clear majority.

On Tuesday, Congress leader KC Venugopal revealed that TVK had reached out to the party for assistance in establishing a government after their impressive electoral debut. Despite securing 108 seats, the TVK fell short of the required 118 seats in the 234-member Assembly, necessitating alliances to reach a governing majority.

In light of the electoral outcome, Venugopal indicated that the Congress leadership had instructed its Tamil Nadu unit to carefully consider the request, emphasizing the importance of reflecting the sentiments of the electorate in their decision-making process. Following discussions, the Congress Tamil Nadu unit articulated its commitment to “secular, progressive, and welfarist politics,” deeming it a constitutional obligation to respect the people’s mandate and assist in its realization.

However, the Congress party has outlined clear conditions for its support. It insists that any coalition with the TVK must exclude communal forces that do not adhere to the principles enshrined in the Indian Constitution. This stipulation highlights the Congress’s intention to maintain a secular fabric within the alliance, aligning with its historical stance on communal harmony and inclusive governance.

The collaboration between Congress and TVK is envisioned not only for the current state government formation but also extends to future electoral contests, including local body elections and the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha seats. As the political dynamics evolve in Tamil Nadu, this partnership reflects a strategic move by Congress to strengthen its foothold in the state alongside a rising political star like Vijay.
