Election Commission Orders Special Drive in Bengal After Explosives Seized Ahead of Polls

The Election Commission of India has instructed the West Bengal Police to initiate a special operation aimed at apprehending individuals involved in the manufacturing of explosives, following the alarming discovery of bomb-making materials just days before the second phase of Assembly elections in the state.

On Sunday, authorities revealed that a significant cache of explosives was uncovered in an abandoned residence in Majherhat, located within South 24 Parganas district. The police reported the recovery of 79 crude bomb-like devices, alongside 3.3 kg of gunpowder, 1.6 kg of sulfur, jute ropes, and ten packets of roll caps, all seized with the aid of the Bomb Disposal Squad. In light of the findings, an investigation has been launched to uncover the origins and intended use of these dangerous materials.

These alarming developments emerge only three days prior to the second phase of polling scheduled for Wednesday, with the first phase already conducted on April 23. The counting of votes is set for May 4. In an effort to maintain law and order during this critical electoral period, both the police and local administration are mandated to report back to the Election Commission, as the Model Code of Conduct remains in effect throughout West Bengal.

An anonymous official from the Election Commission stated that a comprehensive drive has commenced to target individuals engaged in the creation of explosives. The official indicated that all related cases would be escalated for investigation by the National Investigation Agency (NIA), which specializes in handling matters of national security and terrorism. This proactive approach reflects the importance the authorities place on ensuring a safe and peaceful electoral process during a time when political tensions can run high.
