According to CBS News, Batra was apprehended on March 17 at the Harlingen airport in Texas while traveling to Milwaukee, Wisconsin, for work.
Batra has been serving as a court interpreter for over two decades, proficient in Hindi, Punjabi, and Urdu. Born in India, she fled to the United States 35 years ago following the tragic murder of her parents during communal violence. In the year 2000, she was granted a status known as ‘withholding of removal.’ This status does not equate to asylum but allows her limited legal rights to remain in the country.
It is important to note that the status of ‘withholding of removal’ does not permit Batra to seek permanent residency in the U.S., nor does it safeguard her from being deported to a third country. Her attorney has pointed out that her current immigration status permits her to work legally, provided she does not leave the U.S. or commit any crimes. Batra herself expressed her belief to CBS News that her understanding of this status allows her to be in the U.S. legally.
