Reliance Industries, led by Mukesh Ambani, has publicly stated that it has “never feared competition” in response to comments made by Elon Musk regarding the delay of Starlink’s satellite internet service in India. Musk, one of the world’s wealthiest individuals, had alleged that certain Indian oligarchs, presumably referencing Reliance, were obstructing the launch of his satellite internet venture.
In a statement released on Friday, Reliance did not specifically mention Musk but addressed the “recent remarks about Reliance and the Indian market.” The company emphasized that the framework governing market operations in India is firmly based on the rule of law. They pointed out that all businesses, whether domestic or international, must adhere to the same regulatory guidelines, thereby ensuring a level playing field.
Reliance highlighted that its own satellite service, operated under Jio Space Technology, is currently awaiting necessary approvals. The conglomerate expressed its openness to competition, affirming, “We welcome competition in satellite communications, including Starlink. Every player, Jio included, must serve the people of India and abide by the laws and policies of the land.” This statement reinforces Reliance’s commitment to comply with regulatory processes while welcoming new entrants in the Indian telecommunications sector.
Starlink’s ambition to provide internet access through a constellation of low-earth orbit satellites aims to enhance connectivity in underserved regions of India. If introduced, Starlink will face competition not only from Reliance’s Jio Space Technology but also from Eutelsat OneWeb, a partnership backed by Bharti Airtel Group’s Sunil Mittal. This competitive landscape underscores the growing interest in satellite internet services in India, a market that is rapidly evolving with increasing demand for reliable internet access.
The ongoing dialogue between Musk and Reliance underscores the tension that exists between innovative tech solutions and established business practices in India. The Indian government has been cautiously evaluating the implications of foreign satellite internet services, balancing technological advancement with national interests. As the competition heats up, the future of satellite internet in India remains a pivotal topic, impacting millions who seek enhanced connectivity.
