In a significant display of security measures, the Delhi Police has fortified Connaught Place and surrounding areas of central Delhi in anticipation of a planned protest by the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP) on Friday. The political group aims to stage a demonstration titled ‘Lehra Do Tiranga’ at 5 PM, where participants will wave the national flag in a show of solidarity and patriotism.
This upcoming protest is a direct reaction to the recent arrests of CJP leaders Ashutosh Ranka, Saurav Das, and Ajinkya Shinde, who were taken into custody following their actions at Jantar Mantar. The trio had entered the site on Tuesday to voice their dissent against the local authorities’ decision to remove Jantar Mantar from its status as a designated area for protests. This change, which has raised concerns about the rights of citizens to assemble and express their grievances, has been met with significant backlash.
While Ranka and Das remain in judicial custody, Shinde has been released on a personal bond. All three were accused of breaching a bond and obstructing public servants during their protest activities. The events surrounding their arrests have sparked widespread criticism, particularly from opposition leaders who argue that expressing patriotism by waving the tricolor should not lead to imprisonment. Prominent figures, including Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, condemned the arrests, labeling them as an ‘act of cowardice’ against young activists simply exercising their rights.
In light of the situation, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) has also encouraged its supporters to join the CJP’s protest, reflecting a broader discontent with the current political climate. As the city braces for the demonstration, the heightened security measures signify the government’s proactive approach to managing potential unrest while ensuring public safety.
With the backdrop of increasing tensions surrounding citizens’ rights to protest, this event is likely to draw considerable attention not only for its immediate implications but also for its broader significance in the ongoing discourse about dissent in India. As the CJP prepares to make its voice heard, the atmosphere in central Delhi remains charged, reflecting the sensitive nature of political expression in the country today.
