In a troubling revelation, a government hospital in Seoni district, Madhya Pradesh, has reported the deaths of at least 80 newborns over the past six months. The alarming figure has drawn significant attention and raised concerns regarding healthcare standards in the region. Initial reports attribute many of these infant fatalities to complications such as premature births and low birth weight.
Between April and June, a total of 34 infants perished, followed by a further 46 deaths recorded from July to September. The situation has prompted local Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MLA Dinesh Rai Munmun to call for an official investigation into the circumstances surrounding these tragic events. During his visit to the hospital, after hearing of the disturbing reports, he expressed frustration over the initial attempts by hospital staff to prevent his entry.
Upon entering, Rai noted the absence of medical personnel, claiming that staff indicated that an inquiry and audit were ongoing. He raised serious concerns about the hospital’s capacity to care for critically ill newborns, particularly citing that 46 infants had died recently due to respiratory difficulties. The MLA highlighted a significant gap in medical staffing, particularly at night when the hospital is equipped with a ventilator for infants in distress, yet lacks a dedicated doctor to oversee care.
Dr. Vinod Kumar Navkar, the civil surgeon responsible for the hospital, stated that many of the critically ill infants arriving at the facility are referred from rural areas, often born as early as six to eight months into pregnancy. He indicated that the high incidence of premature births contributes to the mortality rates, but this has not alleviated the concerns of the community and local leaders.
The deaths of these newborns have raised questions about the adequacy of healthcare services in Madhya Pradesh, particularly in rural areas where access to quality medical facilities is limited. As the investigation unfolds, local authorities, medical experts, and the community are keenly watching how this situation will be addressed to prevent further tragedies in the future.
