Union Home Minister Amit Shah has accused Congress leader Rahul Gandhi of disseminating false information regarding the special intensive revision of electoral rolls. This statement arose during ongoing protests by various Opposition parties, student organizations, and the Cockroach Janta Party, who are demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar and the cancellation of the voter roll revision.
Shah urged the Congress party to reflect on its consistent electoral setbacks instead of attributing their failures to the electoral roll updates. He contended that the revision process had commenced only after the upcoming 2024 Lok Sabha elections, suggesting that it could not be held responsible for the Congress’s declining performance in previous elections across various states.
“Since you took on the leadership role in Congress, your party has faced continuous electoral defeats,” Shah remarked, highlighting the party’s struggle to secure wins. He further claimed that Gandhi and his associates are trying to shield alleged “infiltrators” by opposing the voter roll update, alleging that the Opposition aims to register these individuals as voters, thereby influencing electoral outcomes.
This political clash unfolds against a backdrop of stringent measures taken in BJP-governed states, where, since May 2025, numerous Bengali-speaking migrant workers have been detained and asked to prove their Indian citizenship. This has raised concerns over the treatment of migrants and the broader implications for civil rights as the nation gears up for the crucial 2024 elections.
The ongoing protests underscore the rising tensions between the ruling BJP and the Opposition as both sides prepare for a fierce electoral battle. As the political landscape evolves, the discourse surrounding voter registration and electoral integrity remains pivotal, with implications that extend beyond party lines.
