In a significant move, Rahul Gandhi, along with ten other leaders from the INDIA coalition, has approached the Supreme Court of India to contest the Election Commission’s (EC) recent intensive revision of electoral rolls. This legal challenge seeks a thorough audit of the voter deletions that have occurred during the revision process, alongside a demand for transparency regarding the internal workings of the Election Commission.
The petition, as reported by Live Law, comes on the heels of the leaders’ request for a personal audience with Chief Justice Surya Kant. Their aim was to present a memorandum addressing concerns about the revision of voter rolls and the overall functioning of the Election Commission. However, the Chief Justice declined their request, citing that similar cases are already under consideration by the Supreme Court and invited the leaders to pursue their grievances through official judicial channels.
Leading the march to the Supreme Court were prominent figures including Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge, along with former Chief Ministers Mamata Banerjee and Akhilesh Yadav. Young activists, such as Neha Bora, the chief of the All India Students’ Association, also joined the procession. This demonstration coincided with widespread protests across India, where various groups have been calling for the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar, reflecting a growing discontent regarding the electoral process.
Initially, Gandhi had intended to personally submit the petition; however, due to timing constraints as the Supreme Court Registry was approaching its closing hours, the petition was ultimately filed through legal representatives. This legal action is seen as a crucial step in pushing for accountability and transparency from the Election Commission, especially concerning the methodology and rationale behind the deletions of voters from the rolls.
The petition aims to scrutinize the decision-making procedures of the Election Commission and requests the submission of records that could illuminate the justification for the deletions. As the political landscape heats up in the run-up to elections, the outcome of this petition may have significant implications for electoral integrity and public trust in the electoral process.
