The ongoing protests led by the Opposition INDIA bloc have taken a significant turn as they prepare to march to the Supreme Court today. Their aim is to submit a memorandum to Chief Justice Surya Kant, demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. This march marks the third consecutive day of demonstrations in Delhi, initiated by various political groups and student organizations under the banner of the Cockroach Janta Party.
Concerns about the Election Commission’s operations, particularly regarding the special intensive revision of electoral rolls, have fueled the protests that began on October 2. High-profile leaders from the opposition, including Rahul Gandhi, Mamata Banerjee, Akhilesh Yadav, and Tejashwi Yadav, are expected to be present during the march. The event seeks to rally public support and encourage citizen participation in raising their voices against what they allege to be electoral malpractice, termed as ‘vote chori.’
Rahul Gandhi has called upon citizens, youth organizations, and all opposition parties to join this movement, emphasizing the importance of collective action in safeguarding the democratic process. The INDIA bloc has instructed its various state units to mobilize their members to ensure a robust turnout in Delhi. This marks the fifth protest by the opposition in the capital since October 6, illustrating the escalating tensions surrounding the functioning of the Election Commission.
Despite the opposition’s efforts to engage with the judiciary, Chief Justice Surya Kant has reportedly declined to meet with the representatives. This refusal adds a layer of complexity to the ongoing situation, as the opposition seeks to address their grievances directly within the judicial framework. The protests have gained traction not just in Delhi but across various regions in India, highlighting widespread discontent regarding the electoral processes overseen by the Election Commission.
As the situation unfolds, it remains to be seen how the government and the Election Commission will respond to the mounting pressures from the opposition and the public. The outcome of today’s march could potentially reshape the political landscape as the Indian political arena gears up for the upcoming elections.
