In a tragic escalation of violence in Manipur, nine individuals lost their lives over a span of 24 hours across the districts of Kamjong, Kangpokpi, and Ukhrul. The unrest, which has been attributed to ongoing ethnic tensions, has resulted in significant destruction, including the burning of at least 14 homes, particularly in the Kamjong area.
The unrest was triggered by the death of a 42-year-old woman from Chassad village, a location predominantly inhabited by the Kuki community but situated in the Naga-majority Kamjong district. Reports indicate that the woman was fatally shot in the neck during a gunfight between armed groups and security forces on Friday night. This confrontation arose after the arrest of several village volunteers, who are armed civilians tasked with providing security to their communities amid the ongoing ethnic strife that has escalated since May 2023.
Following the woman’s death, violent clashes erupted between Kuki and Naga armed factions, resulting in the death of a 22-year-old man. The deteriorating situation has led to the imposition of prohibitory orders in the vicinity of the Chassad police station, extending 400 meters around the area to contain further violence. The district authorities are working to stabilize the area amid fears of more unrest.
In a separate incident, gunfire was reported in the Ningchou village, a settlement primarily inhabited by the Tangkhul Naga community near the Myanmar border. Here, two men were killed by suspected militants, raising concerns about the increasing volatility along the border areas. The victims, Ngachanso Ningshen, 35, and Leishishan Leishadang, 48, were reportedly shot dead, further exacerbating the sense of insecurity among residents.
The ongoing violence in Manipur has roots in the longstanding ethnic discord between the Kuki and Meitei communities, a conflict that has deep cultural and political implications. As authorities grapple with the situation, the need for comprehensive measures to ensure peace and security in the region becomes increasingly urgent. The loss of lives and property signifies the dire consequences of ethnic strife, which continues to plague various regions of India.
