In a significant show of dissent against the current electoral administration, Opposition Members of Parliament (MPs) gathered at Delhi’s Raj Ghat on Thursday, calling for the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. This protest marks the continuation of an agitation led by the INDIA bloc, which has raised concerns regarding the functioning of the Election Commission.
Following a lunch hosted by Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge, the alliance’s MPs made their way to the memorial dedicated to Mahatma Gandhi, underscoring the symbolic nature of their protest. This demonstration is part of a broader series of protests that have unfolded over the past three days in the national capital, highlighting the alliance’s commitment to their cause.
The agitation began on Wednesday when Opposition MPs attempted to hold a rally near Jantar Mantar, a designated space for protests. However, several leaders, including prominent figures Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, were detained by police during the demonstration. They were released later in the day, but their detainment sparked further outrage among the protesters.
On Tuesday, the Opposition MPs initiated a march from Parliament towards the Election Commission headquarters. However, their efforts were thwarted as the police intervened on Parliament Street, resulting in temporary detentions of several leaders. Following their release, Rahul Gandhi and other Congress officials conducted a sit-in protest at the Akashvani Bhawan premises, adjacent to the Election Commission, where they remained for several hours before facing detainment once again.
This series of protests underscores the growing discontent among various political factions regarding the Election Commission’s operations and its perceived impartiality. As the dissent continues to gather momentum across the country, the Opposition remains resolute in its demand for CEC Gyanesh Kumar’s resignation, pointing to the need for a more transparent and accountable electoral process in India.
