In a significant development, three First Information Reports (FIRs) have been filed against Rahul Gandhi, the leader of the Opposition, following allegations of assaulting police officials during a protest organized by the INDIA bloc. The protests were aimed at demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar. Notably, Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi has also been implicated in the FIRs.
The FIRs accuse both Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi of violating several sections of the Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita, which pertain to assaulting police personnel, obstructing governmental operations, and manhandling. The incidents occurred during a demonstration at Raj Ghat in Delhi, a site dedicated to Mahatma Gandhi, where opposition MPs gathered to press for Kumar’s resignation. This protest marks the third consecutive day of demonstrations by the INDIA bloc in the capital.
Concerns around the integrity and functioning of the Election Commission have led to protests not just in Delhi but across various parts of India. The opposition is voicing apprehensions over the Commission’s management of the special intensive revision of electoral rolls, which is crucial for ensuring free and fair elections.
Furthermore, the Congress party has raised serious allegations regarding the Election Commission’s online voter registration portal. They claim that it is engineered to centralize alterations in voter rolls at the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) headquarters, which, if true, would raise questions about the neutrality of the electoral body. These allegations gained traction after it was reported that a security researcher had identified vulnerabilities in the Commission’s voter services website and ECINET platform back in July, alerting the Election Commission regarding potential security breaches.
The situation continues to unfold, with the opposition intensifying its call for accountability from the Election Commission. As protests spread across the nation, the political atmosphere in India remains charged, highlighting the ongoing tensions between the government and opposition parties. The actions taken by the police and the response from the opposition will be closely monitored in the coming days, as they may set the tone for future political engagements leading up to upcoming elections.
