In a striking statement on social media, Elon Musk, the billionaire CEO of SpaceX, has accused unnamed Indian oligarchs of obstructing the launch of Starlink, his satellite internet service, in India. Musk’s claims suggest that these individuals are attempting to preserve their dominance over the telecommunications sector, thereby restricting access to high-speed internet for millions of Indians.
Musk’s remarks came in response to a call from supporters advocating for the rollout of Starlink in India. “Unfortunately, we are being blocked by certain oligarchs in order to maintain their monopolistic chokehold on the Indian people,” he stated. While he did not provide specific names or evidence to support his allegations, the implication of a monopolistic hold on the market raises eyebrows about the competitive landscape of the Indian internet service industry.
SpaceX’s Starlink aims to provide affordable, high-speed internet access through a network of satellites positioned in low Earth orbit. Musk has been vocal about the potential for Starlink to bridge the digital divide, particularly in rural areas of India where internet connectivity is still a challenge. He emphasized that many individuals could benefit from the service, which offers an alternative to conventional internet providers. “This is a crime against the people of India!” he added, highlighting his frustration at the delays.
Adding to the developments, SpaceX executive Lauren Dreyer shared optimistic news regarding the future of Starlink in India. During a recent discussion, she expressed her hopes that the service would be operational by 2027. Dreyer also mentioned that SpaceX has established 20 gateway sites within the country, crucial infrastructure that will enable the delivery of satellite internet services once regulatory hurdles are cleared.
India’s telecommunications market is characterized by fierce competition among established players, and the entry of Starlink is anticipated to further intensify this rivalry. However, the regulatory environment in India can be complex, often hindering the swift deployment of new technologies. As Musk’s accusations gain traction, the impact on discussions between SpaceX and Indian regulators remains to be seen.
