Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andrii Sybiha has praised India’s peace initiative regarding the ongoing conflict with Russia, describing it as the “most comprehensive” proposal to date. Speaking to the press, Sybiha noted that this marks India’s first significant acknowledgment of its potential role in mediating the crisis that has devastated Ukraine since Russia’s invasion began in February 2022.
The conflict, which has escalated into one of the most severe confrontations in Europe since World War II, has drawn international attention and concern. Sybiha emphasized that Ukraine has also received peace proposals from other nations, including Egypt, Turkey, and the United States, indicating a growing global interest in resolving the war.
Moreover, the Ukrainian official mentioned that Kyiv is open to negotiating a truce related to energy and agriculture in the Black Sea, contingent upon an end to hostilities aimed at critical infrastructure, particularly ports. The Black Sea has seen a number of maritime incidents recently, with vessels, including those carrying Indian nationals, coming under fire, further complicating the situation.
On the diplomatic front, Russian President Vladimir Putin acknowledged Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s contributions to the discourse, remarking that Modi had proposed “very good ideas” for achieving a peaceful resolution. Despite these gestures, Putin has firmly rejected any notions of halting long-range strikes, asserting that Moscow’s military objectives remain unchanged. He dismissed calls for reciprocal restraint, underscoring the complexities of negotiating a ceasefire.
As the conflict continues to unfold, the international community is watching closely to see if India’s initiative can foster meaningful dialogue and pave the way toward a lasting peace. The potential for India, a significant player on the global stage, to mediate in this crisis could have far-reaching implications for regional stability and international relations.
