In the quest for sustainable solutions to pressing environmental challenges, the Banni grasslands in Kachchh, Gujarat, have become a focal point for innovative carbon credit initiatives. What began decades ago as a response to desertification has transformed into a complex tale of ecological impact and corporate responsibility.
In the early 1960s, the invasive species Prosopis juliflora was introduced to the Banni grasslands as a means to combat severe desertification. This fast-growing tree was meant to restore ecological balance and support local biodiversity. However, over time, it has taken over nearly half of the grassland area, choking out native flora such as Vachellia nilotica and Prosopis cineraria, and drastically reducing the quality of fodder available to local livestock. Studies indicate that the grassland once yielded up to 4,000 kg of fodder per hectare, a figure that plummeted to around 620 kg by 1999 due to the dominance of this invasive species.
Fast forward to 2025, and a new chapter is unfolding as major corporations are now investing in carbon credits via biochar, a product derived from the very trees that once posed an environmental threat. Google recently made headlines by committing to one of the largest biochar carbon removal agreements to date, purchasing 100,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide removal credits from Varaha ClimateAg Private Limited, a climate-tech startup based in Gurugram. Biochar, created by heating organic material in low-oxygen conditions, has the potential to sequester carbon in soil for hundreds of years, thereby contributing positively to the environment.
Following Google’s lead, tech giants such as Microsoft, Lufthansa, Swiss Re, and Capgemini have also entered into agreements with Varaha. These collaborations underscore a growing trend where corporate entities are increasingly seeking sustainable practices to offset their carbon emissions and contribute to global climate goals.
Varaha’s initiatives in Kachchh aim to not only remove carbon but also restore the local ecosystem. By converting Prosopis juliflora into biochar, the project seeks to revitalize the soil while generating revenue through carbon credits. Khyati Thacker, a botanist who has dedicated over five years to community-led ecosystem restoration in Kachchh and Saurashtra, emphasizes the urgent need to address the ecological imbalance caused by invasive species.
As the world grapples with climate change, the situation in Kachchh presents a unique opportunity to reimagine the narrative around invasive species. By leveraging technology and corporate investment, there is potential not only for ecological restoration but also for economic upliftment in local communities. As these initiatives progress, they may serve as a model for similar environments facing the dual challenges of climate change and biodiversity loss.
