In a devastating incident, at least seven individuals have lost their lives due to flash floods and mudslides in Nepal, as reported by The Kathmandu Post. This calamity has left a significant impact on the tourist community, with the Nepal Tourism Board stating that 105 Indian tourists are among the 291 foreign nationals reported missing following the disastrous events.
The tragic flash floods struck the Rasuwa district, situated approximately 120 kilometers north of Kathmandu, the capital of Nepal, near the border with China. The floods wreaked havoc, sweeping away entire villages along the banks of the Bhotekoshi River, which has led to substantial damage to roads and bridges in the region. Authorities are urging residents living along the Trishuli River to evacuate immediately and find safer ground as the situation remains critical.
In addition to the casualties reported in Rasuwa, several villages in the neighboring Nuwakot district have also been affected. This has prompted a significant response from the Nepali Army and local police, who have initiated search and rescue operations to locate missing individuals and provide assistance to those in need.
The Indian embassy in Kathmandu has taken swift action by establishing emergency contact numbers to aid in communication regarding Indian citizens who may have been impacted by the floods. This measure aims to ensure that families back home can obtain updates about their loved ones amidst the chaos.
Further complicating the situation, reports from the Chinese news agency Xinhua indicate that a mudslide has also occurred at a major border crossing between Nepal and China, leading to fears of additional casualties. This mudslide took place in Gyirong county, directly across the border from Rasuwa, highlighting the widespread nature of the disaster that has affected both nations.
This is an evolving situation, and authorities are continuing to monitor the developments closely. As rescue efforts intensify and more information emerges, there is a collective hope for the safe return of those missing and for support to reach the affected communities swiftly.
