Supreme Court Rejects Grace Marks Demand for CBSE Class 12 Students Amid Evaluation Concerns

In a significant development for CBSE Class 12 students, the Union government informed the Supreme Court on Friday that it cannot grant grace marks to those alleging inaccuracies in the evaluation process. Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, representing the government, stated that the students’ claims stemmed from issues with the Central Board of Secondary Education’s On-Screen Marking system.

The Supreme Court, presided over by Chief Justice Surya Kant, heard the matter where Mehta emphasized that a one-week window had been provided for students to request re-evaluation of their scores, during which 1.68 lakh students submitted applications. He asserted that the petitioners’ request for grace marks was untenable.

Advocate Laxmikant Matadan Shukla, who represented the petitioners including student Rakesh Binjola, argued that the allotted time for re-evaluation was insufficient given the large number of students affected. Shukla highlighted that many students managed to succeed in various entrance examinations but were held back due to failing to achieve the minimum qualifying marks in the Class 12 exams, which they attributed to the alleged faulty evaluation.

Despite these contentions, Mehta reiterated that the government did not view the litigation as adversarial, yet he maintained that the petitioners had missed their opportunity by not submitting their concerns during the designated re-evaluation period. The court has now requested the Union government to submit an affidavit detailing the remedial measures that have been implemented following the identification of irregularities in the evaluation process.

This situation has sparked widespread concern among students and parents, who fear the long-term implications of the evaluation discrepancies on their academic and career prospects. Many are calling for more transparency in the re-evaluation process and accountability from the CBSE to ensure that such issues do not arise in the future. As the debate continues, stakeholders await the government’s detailed response regarding the corrective actions taken to address these serious allegations.
