A violent clash erupted at Kolkata’s Jadavpur University during a general assembly meeting of the Faculty of Engineering and Technology Students’ Union on Wednesday night, which extended into the early hours of Thursday. The confrontation involved members of the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), the student wing affiliated with the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh, and various Left student organizations, leading to several injuries and hospitalizations among students.
The tension escalated as both sides accused each other of inciting violence and of bringing in outsiders to the university campus. Reports indicate that the ABVP alleged that the Left-affiliated groups, particularly the Students’ Federation of India (SFI) and Democratic Students Organization, instigated the confrontation disguised as part of the meeting. On the other hand, the Left factions countered that the ABVP was responsible for the unrest and had engaged in vandalism while inviting non-students onto campus.
Due to the rising tensions, the university’s administrative block, Aurobindo Bhavan, was locked down, while groups of students convened outside to voice their concerns. Eyewitnesses reported instances of fires being set at various locations within the university premises, further emphasizing the chaotic atmosphere that unfolded.
This clash at Jadavpur University is not an isolated incident; the campus has a history of political strife involving student organizations. The political landscape at universities in India is often marked by deep ideological divides, particularly between groups aligned with the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party and Leftist organizations. This incident highlights the ongoing tensions within the academic environment, raising concerns about student safety and the politicization of educational institutions.
As investigations into the clash continue, the university administration faces pressure to ensure a safe learning environment. The clash serves as a stark reminder of the challenges facing students in navigating political affiliations and the impact of these dynamics on their academic pursuits.
