Tourists Attacked at Pune’s Sinhagad Fort Over Clothing Choices: A Clash of Cultures

In a disturbing incident at Sinhagad Fort near Pune, four tourists, including a woman, were reportedly assaulted by members of a Hindutva organization. The attack, which occurred on a Sunday afternoon, has drawn attention to the ongoing tensions surrounding cultural norms and personal expression in India.

The victims, who were visiting the fort, were confronted by individuals from the Samast Hindu Bandhav Army, who objected to their attire, which included shorts and sleeveless clothing. According to reports from the Pune Rural Police, the confrontation escalated between 2 PM and 5 PM, leading to physical violence against the tourists.

The incident began when a 39-year-old senior manager from Dhayari, accompanied by family and friends, was returning from the memorial of Tanaji Malusare, a revered military commander in the history of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. The complainant stated that as they were leaving the fort, a group of individuals questioned their choice of clothing and demanded that they vacate the premises. The situation quickly turned violent, with members of the group allegedly slapping the complainant and physically assaulting his wife.

The attackers reportedly shouted remarks questioning the tourists’ understanding of Hindu culture, igniting a debate about the cultural expectations placed on individuals visiting historical sites in India. Following the incident, the complainant approached the local authorities, resulting in a case being filed against eight members of the accused group. Charges include voluntarily causing hurt, unlawful assembly, rioting, and criminal intimidation.
