Smriti Irani Takes on New Role as BJP General Secretary Amid Leadership Reshuffle

In a significant leadership reshuffle within the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), former Union minister Smriti Irani has been appointed as one of the party’s national general secretaries. This decision marks a strategic move by the BJP as it repositions its leadership under the new party chief, Nitin Nabin. The announcement was made on Monday, indicating a fresh direction for the party as it prepares for upcoming political challenges.

As part of the recent appointments, Ram Madhav, a senior leader from the BJP’s ideological parent organization, the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), has been designated as one of the party’s 13 vice presidents. The leadership update also sees Amit Malviya stepping down from his role as head of the BJP’s social media department, with Deepak Mhaskey taking over the reins. Anil Baluni remains in his position as the party’s media convenor, ensuring continuity in the media strategy.

In further changes, Union minister Piyush Goyal has been appointed as the new party treasurer, replacing Rajesh Agarwal. These appointments are the first major alterations in the BJP’s national hierarchy since Nitin Nabin took charge in January. The leadership overhaul aims to infuse renewed energy and direction into the party’s operations, aligning with the vision laid out by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Smriti Irani, who previously held the Union ministerial position, faced a setback in the 2024 general elections when she lost her constituency in Amethi, Uttar Pradesh, to the Congress party. Following this defeat, she was also excluded from the Union Cabinet formed in June 2024, making her new role as general secretary particularly significant for her political comeback.

Other notable figures in the reshuffle include former Uttarakhand Chief Minister Tirath Singh Rawat and Daggubati Purandeswari, the BJP’s Andhra Pradesh chief, who were also appointed as vice presidents. This move is seen as an effort to consolidate the party’s influence across various regions in India. As the BJP gears up for future electoral battles, these strategic appointments are expected to play a crucial role in shaping the party’s narrative and outreach.
