In a significant development, Harsha Gopal Kadam, the CEO and Managing Director of Schaeffler India, was arrested on Monday in connection with a tragic incident at the company’s factory in Talegaon, Pune, which resulted in the deaths of two workers earlier this year.
The incident, which occurred on June 9, involved a sudden carbon dioxide leak during a scheduled replacement of gas cylinders. This accident not only claimed the lives of two employees but also affected three others, prompting concerns about safety protocols within the facility. Schaeffler India, a subsidiary of the German Schaeffler Group, specializes in manufacturing automotive and industrial components, including bearings and precision machinery.
Following the incident, a police investigation was launched in July, leading to the registration of a case against six individuals, among whom were company officials and contractors responsible for the factory’s fire-suppression systems. Kadam’s arrest was facilitated by the Talegaon MIDC Police, who cited his role as the factory’s “occupier” under the legal framework of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, which holds him accountable for the safety measures in place.
According to the provisions of the 1948 Factories Act, the CEO is deemed the occupier of the factory, which places the onus of operational oversight on him. The initial report indicated that the fire-suppression system at the factory was inadequately designed, lacking proper emergency exits, raising serious questions regarding the workplace safety measures at the facility.
This incident has drawn public attention to the importance of stringent safety regulations in industrial settings, especially in the wake of unfortunate incidents like this. As investigations continue, it remains to be seen how Schaeffler India will address these safety concerns and implement necessary reforms to prevent future occurrences.
