In a concerning development, two activists advocating for Adivasi and Dalit rights in southern Odisha were apprehended by police in Bhawanipatna, Kalahandi district, on Friday night. Randall Sequeira and Laxman Naik were taken from Sequeira’s residence around 10:45 PM, according to reports from fellow activists and the Right to Food Campaign.
Eyewitnesses claim that officers seized their mobile devices and transported them to the local police station without providing any rationale for their arrest or presenting a warrant. The activists were reportedly held overnight without access to legal counsel or contact with their families, raising significant concerns about their rights. They were subsequently moved to Rayagada the next day and presented before a sub-divisional judicial magistrate around 6:30 PM, following which they were remanded to Rayagada Sub Jail.
Interestingly, neither Sequeira nor Naik is mentioned in the initial complaint regarding the violent clash that transpired earlier this year, suggesting that their detention might be linked to broader issues surrounding the proposed Vedanta bauxite mine project. This incident traces back to a confrontation that occurred on the night of April 6-7 in Kantamal village, Rayagada district, where local residents were protesting against a road construction initiative associated with the mine.
The proposed road, spanning approximately 3 kilometers from Purlong to Sagabari Ghat, aims to facilitate access to the Sijimali bauxite mine. However, the local populace has expressed vehement opposition to the project, citing concerns over its implications for their land, livelihoods, and the environment. The clash with police was reportedly instigated as law enforcement moved in to quell the protests, igniting tensions that have continued to simmer in the region.
The arrests have sparked outrage among local activists and civil rights organizations, who argue that the actions taken against Sequeira and Naik are emblematic of a broader crackdown on dissent in the state. Critics assert that the government’s approach to dissenting voices reflects a worrying trend of suppressing grassroots activism, especially in light of ongoing conflicts surrounding corporate projects in indigenous territories.
The unfolding situation in Odisha highlights the delicate balance between development initiatives and the rights of local communities, raising questions about the future of activism in the region and the treatment of those who stand against powerful corporate interests.
