A significant political shift unfolded on Monday when a faction of 20 MPs from the Trinamool Congress (TMC) penned a letter to Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, extending their support to the ruling National Democratic Alliance (NDA). This development, led by TMC leader Kakoli Ghosh Dastidar, indicates a fracture within the party, which is already facing turbulence both at the state level and in the Rajya Sabha.
The TMC, under the leadership of Mamata Banerjee, holds a total of 28 seats in the Lok Sabha, having initially won 29 during the recent 2024 elections. However, the untimely demise of the Basirhat MP has left a vacant seat that is yet to be filled through a bye-election. The endorsement of the NDA by these MPs coincides with increasing dissent within the party, as evidenced by the recent rebellion among a majority of its MLAs.
On Wednesday, in a bold move, 58 out of the 80 TMC MLAs revolted against party leadership and chose the expelled party member Ritabrata Banerjee as their leader of the Opposition. This action is perceived as a direct challenge to Mamata Banerjee, who is backing Sovandeb Chattopadhyay as the Opposition leader in the West Bengal Assembly. The internal discord raises questions about the party’s unity and future direction, particularly as it navigates the upcoming political landscape.
The letter to Speaker Birla was drafted following a meeting held at the residence of Bhupendra Yadav, a Union minister and the BJP’s West Bengal observer, in New Delhi. The gathering also featured Suvendu Adhikari, the Chief Minister of West Bengal, further signaling the alignment of the breakaway faction with the BJP. Prominent figures in this division include Howrah MP Prasun Banerjee, Bankura MP Anup Chakraborty, and Cooch Behar MP Jagadish Chandra Barma Basunia.
This unexpected political maneuvering by TMC MPs highlights the shifting dynamics within West Bengal’s political sphere, as the state prepares for future elections and faces ongoing challenges within its ruling party. As the NDA continues to solidify its power at the national level, the ramifications of this split within the TMC could reshape the political landscape in West Bengal, making it a focal point for observers and analysts alike.
