In a tragic incident in Manipur’s Kangpokpi district, three civilians belonging to the Kuki community were confirmed dead following a violent attack early Friday morning. According to a senior police official, the violence erupted around 4 AM, leading to the destruction of at least seven homes in the village of Loibol Khullen.
The deceased individuals have been identified as Letkhongam Haokip, Tinmary Haokip, and Jangminlal Haokip, all residents of the affected village. Reports indicate that heavy gunfire was heard in the locality, prompting a mass exodus of residents fleeing their burning homes. Eyewitnesses shared that the chaotic exchange of fire between rival groups lasted for several minutes.
The Kuki Inpi Manipur, an organization representing the Kuki tribes, has condemned the violence, labeling it a grave violation of human dignity and fundamental rights. They expressed their outrage over the deliberate targeting of innocent civilians and the destruction of their homes. The group has alleged that the assault was orchestrated by heavily armed members of two Naga militant factions, although these groups have yet to respond to the accusations.
The Kuki Inpi Manipur has called upon the Union government and local security agencies to conduct a thorough investigation into the incident. They seek to identify the perpetrators and ensure that they are brought to justice. Furthermore, the organization is urging the authorities to implement enhanced security measures in vulnerable areas to prevent future attacks, which have become increasingly frequent amid the ongoing tensions in the region.
The violence in Manipur is part of a larger narrative of ethnic strife that has plagued the state for years. Recent months have seen a resurgence of clashes between different communities, with each side accusing the other of aggression. The government’s challenge will be to navigate these complex issues while ensuring the safety and security of all citizens in the region.
