Supreme Court Grants Vinesh Phogat Permission to Compete in Asian Games Trials

The Supreme Court of India has intervened in the ongoing dispute concerning wrestler Vinesh Phogat, allowing her to compete in the selection trials for the 2026 Asian Games. The May 22 ruling from the High Court stated that the WFI’s policy was exclusionary, noting that it did not accommodate athletes like Phogat who were returning after taking maternity leave. The court emphasized that a woman’s decision to take maternity leave should not place her at a disadvantage in professional sports. This ruling was hailed as a significant step towards gender equality in athletics, aiming to ensure that female athletes are not penalized for familial responsibilities.

During the Supreme Court proceedings, Justice Narasimha remarked on the High Court’s reasoning in granting relief to Phogat, indicating some reservations about the implications of the ruling. He pointed out that Phogat had communicated her sabbatical to the federation in December 2024 to prepare for her return, a factor that could influence the ongoing discussions regarding athlete eligibility.
