Allahabad High Court Seeks UP Government’s Response on Detention of Journalist Amid Noida Protests

The Allahabad High Court has directed the Uttar Pradesh government to respond to a habeas corpus petition concerning the detention of former journalist Satyam Verma, who was arrested following a workers’ protest in Noida on April 13. The court’s bench, comprising Justices Salil Kumar Rai and Devendra Singh-I, issued a notice to the state and scheduled the hearing for July 13.

The petition, submitted by Verma’s wife, challenges the legality of his detention, alleging procedural irregularities in the manner of his custody and subsequent transfer. It calls for his immediate release and demands the preservation of all electronic and documentary evidence linked to his detention, as reported by the legal news outlet Live Law.

Satyam Verma, 60, hailing from Lucknow, was one of two individuals arrested under the controversial National Security Act (NSA) on May 13. This legislation permits authorities to detain individuals without trial for extended periods, potentially up to a year. Alongside Verma, 25-year-old Aakriti Chaudhary, also affiliated with the Mazdoor Bigul Dasta workers’ organization, was detained.

Authorities have accused Verma and Chaudhary of playing a pivotal role in instigating violence and disorder during the protest, alleging that they incited individuals across various locations to disrupt public peace. Furthermore, police claims suggest that Verma received financial support from foreign accounts to fuel the unrest, an assertion that raises significant concerns regarding the implications of such allegations on press freedom and civil liberties in the region.
