The Central Government has officially recognized issues within the evaluation process for Class 12 answer sheets conducted by the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE). Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan confirmed the government’s acceptance of responsibility for discrepancies that have surfaced in the On-Screen Marking (OSM) system, which has faced strong criticism from students and parents alike.
In recent weeks, students have raised alarms regarding the OSM evaluation method, citing concerns that the scanned copies of their answer sheets did not match their own handwriting. This has led to fears of possible mismatches in answer sheets, prompting widespread frustration among the students. Moreover, issues related to re-evaluation requests surfaced, with complaints about portal failures, delayed payment confirmations, and in some instances, erroneous extra charges due to technical errors.
During a recent statement, Minister Pradhan assured that stringent measures would be taken against any individuals who are found to be culpable for the irregularities in the evaluation process. “We take responsibility for any problems students face and apologize for them,” he stated. Pradhan emphasized that anyone intentionally contributing to these discrepancies would face severe consequences, regardless of their position within or outside the CBSE.
This year marked the inaugural use of the OSM evaluation process by CBSE, which was touted as a globally-recognized and student-friendly system designed to enhance transparency in the marking process. However, the recent wave of complaints has raised critical questions about the efficacy and reliability of this newly introduced method. Experts from the Indian Institute of Technology-Kanpur have been consulted to analyze the situation further.
The acknowledgement of these issues comes at a crucial time when students are already grappling with the pressures of academic performance and future prospects. As the education sector continues to evolve towards digital solutions, the government’s responsiveness to such concerns will be vital in restoring confidence among students and their families.
