The district administration has made comprehensive arrangements for the conduct of municipal council elections in six towns on Tuesday, the State Election Commission said. Additional Deputy Commissioner-cum-Additional District Election Officer Nikas Kumar said voting in Mukerian, Dasuya, Garhshankar, Haryana, Garhdiwala and Urmur Tanda will take place from 8 AM to 5 PM.
Giving details of the measures taken to ensure smooth and transparent voting, Nikas Kumar said polling will be held across 80 wards in the six municipal councils, with a total of 118 polling stations and 263 candidates contesting the elections.
He said CCTV cameras have been installed both outside and inside polling stations in line with the Election Commission’s instructions, and CCTV coverage will also be provided at the counting venues on May 29. Security personnel have been deployed in required numbers by the district police to maintain law and order and ensure the electoral process proceeds smoothly.
Voters can cast their votes by producing their voter identity card. Those without voter cards may instead present other identification documents as prescribed by the Election Commission, including Aadhaar card, passport, driving licence, PAN card with photograph, MGNREGA job card, ration card/blue card, arms licence with photograph, pension document with photograph, freedom fighter identity card with photograph, or bank/post office passbook with photograph.
Additionally, voters may also use the health insurance smart card issued by the Ministry of Labour, identity cards issued to MPs or MLAs, UDID cards issued by the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment, departmental identity cards issued to central and state government officers/employees, or student identity cards with photographs issued by recognised educational institutions.
He added that by Monday afternoon all 118 polling parties and essential staff had been dispatched to their respective polling stations.
