In a tragic turn of events, three individuals have lost their lives and several others sustained injuries during violent clashes between the Kuki and Naga communities in Ukhrul district of Manipur. The incident occurred early on Friday morning, marking a significant escalation in tensions that have been simmering in the region since ethnic conflicts erupted in May 2023.
According to reports, two of the deceased were identified as Kukis, while the third was a member of the Tangkhul Naga community, which is the predominant group in the area. The Kuki Organisation for Human Rights has accused armed members of the Tangkhul Naga community of launching a surprise attack on Kuki villages, namely Mullam and Shongphal, around 5:30 AM while residents were still asleep. This assault reportedly involved the use of firearms, resulting in the fatalities of two local volunteers who were acting as guards and the wounding of several others, including women and children. In addition to the violence, over a dozen homes were allegedly set ablaze during the attack.
The local Kuki community has claimed that they acted in self-defense, utilizing legally licensed hunting arms to repel the assailants. Reports indicate that the two deceased individuals, identified as L Sitlhou and P Haolai, were found dressed in camouflage attire with gunshot wounds, suggesting they were active in defending their community at the time of the attack. The Kuki Organisation for Human Rights described the volunteers as “village defenders” who had taken up arms to protect their homes amidst ongoing ethnic strife.
On the other hand, the Naga Village Guard has claimed that Kuki militants initiated the violence by opening fire on their members who were on patrol duty in the region. Tensions between the two communities have deepened in recent months, with both sides accusing each other of aggressive actions and violations of peace. With the Naga villagers reportedly patrolling the area to safeguard their settlements, the situation remains precarious and charged.
This violent incident underscores the ongoing ethnic strife in Manipur, where multiple clashes have led to loss of life and displacement of hundreds. The situation in the region is exacerbated by underlying historical grievances and recent political developments. Authorities and community leaders are now faced with the pressing challenge of restoring peace and addressing the root causes of these conflicts to prevent further escalation.
