The Gauhati High Court has officially dismissed a petition for anticipatory bail submitted by Congress leader Pawan Khera. This ruling comes in light of serious allegations against him in a case initiated by the Assam police, which include charges of defamation, forgery, and criminal conspiracy. The complaint was filed by Riniki Bhuyan Sarma, the wife of Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma.
Justice Parthivjyoti Saikia, presiding over the case, had initially reserved his decision on Khera’s bail application on April 21. On Friday, he announced the rejection of the anticipatory bail plea, leaving Khera with limited options moving forward. The controversy erupted when Khera claimed on April 5 that he possessed evidence suggesting that Riniki Bhuyan Sarma held passports from several countries, including the United Arab Emirates, Egypt, and Antigua and Barbuda. Following these assertions, both the Chief Minister and his wife vehemently denied Khera’s allegations, accusing him of relying on forged documents.
The legal troubles for Khera began to escalate when he sought protection from arrest in Telangana, where the High Court granted him a temporary transit anticipatory bail for a week on April 10. However, this brief respite was short-lived, as the Supreme Court intervened on April 15, placing a stay on the Telangana High Court’s order and directing Khera to seek recourse in the Gauhati High Court instead.
In a public statement made on April 6, Himanta Biswa Sarma accused Khera of using documents purportedly supplied by a Pakistani social media entity to bolster his claims. This allegation has raised eyebrows and added a layer of complexity to an already sensitive situation, highlighting the fraught dynamics of political discourse in India.
The fallout from this case continues to unravel, underscoring the intense political climate and the contentious nature of public statements made by political figures in the country. As the case progresses, the implications for Khera, as well as for broader political interactions, remain to be seen.
