Delhi Court Orders FIR Against Commentator for Inappropriate Remarks on Newslaundry Journalists

A Delhi court has mandated that a first information report (FIR) be lodged against commentator Abhijit Iyer-Mitra for allegedly posting derogatory comments about female journalists employed by the news organization Newslaundry. The decision was made on Wednesday by Judicial Magistrate First Class Bhanu Pratap Singh at the Saket Court, following a complaint filed by the journalists themselves.

The judge highlighted that Iyer-Mitra’s social media remarks could expose him to charges under the Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita, specifically sections related to sexual harassment and the insult of a woman’s modesty. Singh emphasized the need for a thorough police investigation, noting that the offenses were committed in cyberspace, necessitating a careful examination of Iyer-Mitra’s social media account on X (formerly Twitter) and the digital devices used to post these comments.

Newslaundry’s Managing Editor Manisha Pande, along with her colleagues, took the legal route after claiming that Iyer-Mitra had consistently employed offensive language and slurs directed at them. The court’s move follows an earlier directive issued on August 13, where the judge instructed the Malviya Nagar Police Station to submit an action taken report concerning the situation. The police were tasked with determining whether any formal complaint had been filed and detailing the steps taken in response.

In a subsequent hearing in November, the police were granted a final chance to present their action report. The situation underscores the growing concern regarding online harassment, particularly in the context of journalism where women often face targeted abuse.
