In a significant diplomatic move, U.S. President Donald Trump announced on Tuesday the extension of the ceasefire with Iran until the country presents a comprehensive proposal aimed at ending the long-standing conflict in the West Asian region. This announcement comes just hours before a two-week ceasefire, which commenced on April 8, was set to expire.

During his announcement, Trump cited the internal divisions within the Iranian government as a reason for the extension. He noted that the request for a continued ceasefire had been made by Pakistan’s military chief, Field Marshal Asim Munir, along with Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif. Trump emphasized the need for a unified proposal from Iran’s leaders before the U.S. could consider further military actions.

Despite the ceasefire extension, President Trump made it clear that the U.S. military would maintain its blockade of Iranian ports, a measure that had been initiated shortly after discussions between the two nations broke down on April 13. The blockade is intended to exert pressure on Iran and limit its capabilities while negotiations are underway. Trump stated, “We will hold our attack on the Country of Iran until such time as their leaders and representatives can come up with a unified proposal.”

The Iranian government, however, appears to be skeptical about the ceasefire extension. Mahdi Mohammadi, an advisor to the Iranian parliament’s speaker, commented that the continuation of the ceasefire “means nothing” in practical terms. This sentiment reflects the deep-rooted mistrust that exists between the two nations, stemming from years of tension and unresolved issues.

This development has drawn attention not only in the U.S. and Iran but also among countries in the South Asian region, including India, which is closely monitoring the situation due to its strategic interests.
