The Election Commission of India has made a significant update to the electoral rolls in West Bengal, adding 136 voters whose appeals were accepted by appellate tribunals prior to the first phase of the Assembly elections. This update was published in a supplementary list on Wednesday, and it comes in the backdrop of a special intensive revision of the electoral rolls that has been ongoing in the state.
The decision by the Election Commission follows the directives issued by the Supreme Court on April 16, which mandated the inclusion of voters whose appeals against deletions were approved. According to reports from ABP Ananda, the approval rate for these appeals was an impressive 98.5%, with only 138 cases being adjudicated by the tribunals before the initial round of voting.
Of the 34 lakh appeals that were pending before the tribunals, approximately 27 lakh were filed by individuals seeking to be reinstated on the electoral rolls, while 7 lakh appeals concerned objections to names being added. This highlights the complexities involved in the electoral revision process, as many citizens are grappling with their voting rights ahead of the crucial elections.
As per the Supreme Court’s instructions, voters whose appeals were cleared by the tribunals prior to April 21 will be eligible to vote in the first phase of the elections. Furthermore, those whose appeals are resolved by April 27 are expected to be incorporated into the final voter list for the second phase. The urgency of this process underscores the importance of ensuring that all eligible voters are accounted for in a timely manner, reflecting the democratic ethos of the electoral process.
With the backdrop of West Bengal’s vibrant political landscape, these developments are particularly noteworthy. The state is gearing up for a highly contested Assembly election, and the inclusion of these additional voters could influence the outcome in various constituencies. As the Election Commission works diligently to finalize the electoral rolls, the focus remains on ensuring a fair and inclusive voting process.
