In a significant political development, Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra has accused the Central government of attempting to undermine democratic principles and distort the federal framework of India. This assertion follows the recent failure of the 131st Constitutional Amendment Bill in the Lok Sabha, which was intended to facilitate the delimitation of electoral constituencies and amend the 2023 Women’s Reservation Act.
Speaking to reporters, Vadra emphasized that the rejection of this bill represents a triumph for both the Constitution and the united front of the Opposition parties. She further stated that the government should prioritize the implementation of the women’s reservation bill, which was passed with consensus earlier this year, thereby granting women their rightful representation in legislative bodies.
Vadra highlighted that the focus of the contentious draft legislation extended beyond women’s representation in Parliament and state assemblies. Instead, it was centered on the delimitation process, which could have allowed the Modi administration to proceed without considering crucial data, such as the caste census. This, according to her, would have granted the government undue authority to act without accountability.
Calling for adherence to the current strength of the Lok Sabha for the women’s reservation initiative, Vadra stated, “The Modi government must act now to ensure that women receive their due rights. The entire Opposition stands united in support of women’s reservation.”
The controversy surrounding this bill raises larger questions about the integrity of democratic practices in India and the representation of marginalized groups. The women’s reservation bill is perceived as a critical step towards gender equality in the political landscape, and its delay has sparked significant backlash from various sectors of society.
